Lay Aside Every Weight

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(Hebrews 12:1-2) KJV

When we believe in Jesus Christ we’re quickened, and we have the power to overcome the real weight of real sin which is dragging us down to a real hell.

Lay aside every weight isn’t a euphemism or a metaphorical description of what happens when we accept Jesus Christ as our savior. When we believe in Jesus Christ we’re quickened, and we have the power to overcome the real weight of real sin which is dragging us down to a real hell.

A well developed theme throughout the New Testament is that Christians can hinder their spiritual growth by continuing in sin, even after salvation. They’re still saved, but they’re still living in sin too, which defeats the purpose of the freedom that they’ve been given when they were regenerated by faith in Christ.

We’ve been given the power to lay aside every weight, so why don’t we, why are we holding on to it? It’s much easier to run our race when we’re unencumbered.
