The Sides of the Pit

Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword: Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.
(Ezekiel 32:22-23) KJV

We’ve seen in scripture that, after death, all souls go to the grave. This is one of the ways that the word sheol is translated. We’ve found that after that there are two possible outcomes:

Those who knew the Lord during their life remain in the mantle,
- a place euphemistically called Abraham’s bosom.
Those who rejected the Lord descend into the core.

The Midst of Sheol

The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’
(Ezekiel 32:21) ESV

Sheol is the Hebrew word which was translated hell. Newer translations don’t translate it, they leave it as it is acknowledging that no one in their right mind today believes that hell is at the center of the Earth.

He also First Descended

(Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)
(Ephesians 4:9-10) NKJV

Who descended and what are the lower parts of the Earth? Fortunately this isn’t a mystery and we’ve already done the work needed to resolve both issues.

The World Below

Elam is there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.
(Ezekiel 32:24) ESV

Most Christians avoid the question: what happened to the Old Testament saints when they died? They couldn’t go to heaven because it was before the crucifixion and the propitiation hadn’t been paid for their redemption.

Sheol

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
(Psalms 16:10) ESV

Sheol refers to life beyond the grave, quite literally an underworld realm of the dead. It’s also modified in a variety of ways which can be grouped to correspond to the regions of the interior of the Earth.
