The Earth Above the Waters

to him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever;

(Psalms 136:6) ESV

You can scratch your head all day pondering the spiritual truth behind a supposed metaphor, or you can take it literally and deduce that the Earth above the waters refers to the crust and mantle.

The scriptural context of our featured verse is a passage in which the creative steps of the second, third and fourth day are laid out in chronological order.

We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.

Matty’s Razor

Psalms 136:5-9 Chronology

  1. 2nd Day
    • v. 5 – To him that by wisdom made the heavens:
  2. 3rd Day
    • v.6 – To him that stretched out the earth above the waters:
  3. 4th Day
    • v.7 – To him that made great lights:
    • v.8 – The sun to rule by day:
    • v.9 – The moon and stars to rule by night:

This interpretation gives us a way to incorporate several other tricky passages of scripture into a 3D model of a spherical Earth. For instance, the crust and mantle are above a vast chamber filled with the waters of the great deep up until Noah’s flood. After which the open space is referred to as the great gulf or chasm. As such the Earth (crust and mantle) has been established upon the floods.

Faith is believing in something that you can’t see, because of evidence.

– Faith, definition

{A Psalm of David.} The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

(Psalms 24:1-2) KJV

This means that the great deep, or depths (both translated from the Hebrew tehom) was stored in a vast subterranean chamber in the interior of the Earth.

He gathers the waters of the sea together ]as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses.

(Psalms 33:7) NKJV

We can also incorporate structures sometime referred to as the pillars of the earth, since they are like beams which support the roof of the chamber occupied by the great deep.

Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:

(Psalms 104:3) KJV
