God’s Rightful Place

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

(Revelation 21:1-2) KJV

During the month of December our devotion is going to be a study of heaven, which is to say, the next life. We’re going to see if we can clear up some misconceptions about what comes next.

Wines on the Lees

And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.

(Isaiah 25:6-8) KJV

Anyone who survives the tribulation will live in peace on the Lord’s holy mountain, build a shelter, plant a grape vine, and enjoy the good things of life. You just have to survive.

Another Sign in Heaven

And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

(Revelation 15:1-8) KJV

We will shortly wrap up this month’s discussion of the Millennial Kingdom. Before we do I want to share something that I have discovered about the way that the different parts of the book of Revelation appear to line up.

My Holy Mountain

Is Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, one of the pillars of the Earth?

And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD. And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the LORD. For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

(Isaiah 66:20-23) KJV

The mountain referred to by Old Testament prophets as “my holy mountain” is a reworking of the current land configuration as opposed to something completely new of extra-terrestrial origin.

The Mount of Olives

Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.

(Zechariah 14:3-4) KJV

We can pull together several loose threads we have which describe an old and a new hydrological system, the great deep and a new deep.

The Waters Shall Be Healed

And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?”

Then he led me back to the bank of the river. As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river very many trees on the one side and on the other. And he said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh. And wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. For this water goes there, that the waters of the sea may become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes.

(Ezekiel 47:6-9) ESV

Ezekiel describes water flowing from the temple in Jerusalem which will heal everything that it touches. It’s necessary after the devastation of Earth during the tribulation. Fish will thrive again.

A Very High Mountain

In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me thither. In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south. And he brought me thither, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate. And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.

(Ezekiel 40:1-4) KJV

Ezekiel gives us a detailed vision of the temple that will be built in the Millennial Kingdom. This ties to our context of hydrology in verse 2: In the visions of God… and set me upon a very high mountain.

Every Mountain And Island Were Moved

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

(Revelation 6:12-14) KJV

Every mountain and island were moved out of their places. Hmmm, sounds familiar…

A Mountain Filled the Whole Earth

Jagged mountain range

Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

(Daniel 2:34-35) KJV

By adding Daniel to Isaiah and Zechariah we’re starting to build a deep bench of prophets who foresaw the changes that take place at the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom.

From Geba to Rimmon

The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.

(Zechariah 14:10-11) ESV

The prophecy of the establishment of the Millennial Kingdom describes dramatic changes to the landscape. Zechariah chapter 14 is one of several that describe Jerusalem being lifted up.
